But if you haven&#8217;t seen the October issue of <em>Our State<\/em> magazine already, be sure to check out my review of <em>Little Boy Blues: A Memoir<\/em>, by my old (but not quite as old as I) friend Malcolm Jones, a critic for <em>Newsweek <\/em>since 1989. The book was published by Pantheon Books earlier in the year. It&#8217;s a delight to read. \u00a0Malcolm is a fine, thoughtful writer who examines his difficult childhood with uncommon honesty and grace. In the process, he also gives us some insightful, evocative glimpses of Winston-Salem in the 1950s and &#8217;60s.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I wrote a longer review\/personal column about Malcolm and his book for the <em>Winston-Salem Journal<\/em> a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<em>Our State<\/em> (subtitle: Down Home in North Carolina) has a good books section every month, focusing on North Carolina books and authors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question for the day: If your friends publish their memoirs, does that mean you&#8217;re getting old? \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know the answer to that.
