Little, Brown. 433 pages. $29.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lindabrinson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DarkSacred.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2467\" src=\"https:\/\/lindabrinson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DarkSacred-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lindabrinson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DarkSacred-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lindabrinson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DarkSacred-768x448.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lindabrinson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DarkSacred.jpg 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s fitting that Rene Ballard and Harry Bosch share a book.\u00a0 She\u2019s the latest Michael Connelly character with one book under her belt, and Bosch has more than two dozen.\u00a0They\u2019re both cut from the same creative cloth Connelly has been weaving for years.\u00a0In fact, if you take out the name in certain passages, as the narrative shifts back and forth between them, you can\u2019t tell which one Connelly is talking about.\u00a0 \u201c\u2026 had never been the kind of detective who could leave the work in a drawer at the end of shift, \u201c in one chapter.\u00a0 \u201c\u2026 operated according to the axiom that everybody counts in this world or nobody counts,\u201d in another. In other words, this latest book is double-barreled Bosch, with a twist.<\/p>\n<p>When Ballard catches Bosch snooping around the Hollywood LAPD station, she finds out he is working a cold case, a young girl whose mother he\u2019s sheltering for the time being.\u00a0 She\u2019s been shunted to the \u201clate show,\u201d the night shift, since she filed a harassment complaint against her last supervisor, and lost.\u00a0Bosch, who makes more on his pension than she does in salary, is working for free at the San Fernando Valley Police Department.\u00a0Ballard decides to help him out.\u00a0And therein lie two tales that come together at the book\u2019s conclusion, as they work their\u00a0regular cases, and then the cold case as time allows.<\/p>\n<p>Connelly fills the narrative with police procedure, as two detectives ply their trade.\u00a0The detail serves as counterpoint to the constant decision by these two mavericks to get around procedure. In both cases, their decisions lead to crises requiring the other one to come to the rescue.<\/p>\n<p>There is chemistry here, between the two detectives, and in Connelly\u2019s writing.\u00a0At the end of the book, they shake hands and go their separate ways.\u00a0Here\u2019s betting they\u2019ll be back together sooner or later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Robert P.
